Indian Transsexual Faces Deportation
11/28/2013
An Indian Transgender Man who fled his home country to seek refuge in the UK is now facing deportation although he fears discrimination and retribution from those back home.
Sameer Neelam was born a woman in the Hyderabad area of India, but throughout her upbringing felt as if she was in the wrong body. He began crossdressing at a young age, and although he hasn't undergone any surgical procedures, Mr. Neelam was spending half of the day as a woman, half as a man.
Living his double life - during the day as a woman, Sameer worked as a local official, a prominent member of the community and an upstanding citizen. At night he would come home and resume his life as Sameer with his female partner, though he constantly feared word getting out and would not walk dare walk around as a man in public.
However, one day his worst nightmare became a reality and he was "outed by the Indian media". It was at that point that he feared for his safety and escaped persecution by coming to the UK. Settling in Bradford, Sameer says that he has been able to live freely and walk around dressed as he likes.
"If I open myself as a man in India I will be looked down on, tortured, discriminated, eliminated."
Speaking of his time in Bradford, however, he says:
"I'm enjoying my life as a man and if somebody calls me 'Mr' or says 'he' I feel energetic."
Now he faces possible deportation, though his appeal is yet to go through the courts. He will find out in the coming days whether he is allowed to stay, or will be forced to go.
In the UK, we have a fairly liberal policy on those asylum seekers that we accept, where the law states that a person:
"may claim asylum when he or she fears persecution on account of his or her actual or perceived gender identity which does not, or is deemed not to, conform to prevailing political, social or cultural norms in his or her country of origin."
Unfortunately India is still somewhat behind on its acceptance of non-heteronormative gender associations, and so Sameer cannot live his life to the full. It's funny though, considering that most common porn search in that side of the world is "shemale sex" and "man fucking man", whilst many of our clients come from that side of the world too. It seems as though, much like the west, the enamourment with shemales, transvestites and transsexuals exists, though it's still shamefully looked down upon. We can only hope that one day TGirls and TGuys across the world will be able to live their lives freely.
